I am trying to turn a chess set for my grandson and so far i tried a piece of redoak that was fro a piece of 2x 10 and quite dry and i am getting a lot of chip outs should a go to some wetter wood i have some fresh cherry, red oak, bradford pear any suggestions?

I would try charring the red oak or ash for the black pieces, and maple or holly for white.
